Congratulations to Dr. Marisa Ferrera for being the first UPMC resident to complete the newly offered "Pediatric Rotation with International Component" fondly known as the "Mission Rotation". The goal of this rotation is to have the participating residents acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to be a confident, contributing team members on international philanthropic surgical trips. Dr. Ferrera travelled to Viet Nam with SurgiCorps for a very interesting week of surgery. She packed and transported all anesthesia supplies, set up an OR, interviewed surgical patients( many of whom had diseases she had not yet encountered in the United States surgical population), provided the anesthesia and post op care with bare-bones resources and interacted with other team members as well as Vietnamese families and Vietnamese OR personnel. All ASA standards of care were upheld but there was animated discussion over whether cardboard flutter valves reinforced with papertape (in the anesthesia circle circuit) violated any safety issues. The team leaders from SurgiCorp were extremely impressed by the highly professional care Dr. Ferrera provided and are looking forward to working with many more such exemplary UPMC residents. Again, thanks to Marisa for setting the bar so high and representing our Department so well.
