Manuel C. Vallejo Jr. |
The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited the Department of Anesthesiology’s Obstetric (OB) Anesthesiology Program, effective July 1, 2012.
The program, directed by Professor Manuel C. Vallejo Jr., MD, DMD, is accredited for a three year time period, the maximum cycle length granted for first time accreditation. Although this is the initial ACGME accreditation for the OB fellowship, The Department of Anesthesiology at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital (MWH) has offered it since the late 1970s. MWH is one of the leading Womancare Centers in the country, with more than 11,000 obstetric deliveries annually. OB fellows have the opportunity to participate in state-of-the-art anesthetic care of low- and high-risk obstetrical patients, as well as opportunities in clinical and basic science research in the discipline. A strong Maternal Fetal Medicine Division, together with Magee-Womens Research Institute, further enhances training.
The ACGME accredits post-MD medical training programs within the United States. The council’s mission is to improve the quality of health in the United States by ensuring and improving the quality of graduate medical education experience for physicians in training.
The OB Anesthesiology program is one year long and is approved for enrollment of two fellows.
