First Perioperative and Critical Care Monitoring Conference and Workshops

11th Annual Safar Symposium - May 16 & 17, 2013

The 11th Annual Safar Symposium will be held on May 16-17, 2013.  The program on Thursday, May 16 will be held at the University Club and will begin with a Multi-Departmental Trainees’ Research session, followed by the 33rd Peter & Eva Safar Lecture.  This year’s Safar Lecturer will be Dr. John Povlishock, Professor of Anatomy and Neuroscience at VCU and a leading authority on axonal injury in traumatic brain injury (TBI).  This will be followed by a session on “TBI: Making a Difference in Military and Civilian Outcomes,” which will feature a number of national and local experts in the field.

The symposium will continue at the Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation Education and Research (WISER) on Friday, May 17 with a full day program addressing Military Medicine and Trauma Simulation.  Please mark your calendars.

10th Annual Pre-ASA Meeting of OAPRS/SAGA Orthopedic Anesthesia Pain & Rehabilitation Society/Society for the Advancement of Geriatric Anesthesia

Overview: The intent of this conference is to provide attendees with an update about commonly experienced clinical situations involving both elderly and orthopedic patients. Specialists from the Society of Geriatric Anesthesia (SAGA) will discuss CNS dysfunction, risk stratification and the effects on anesthetic depth and the effects on the perioperative outcome of the elderly patient.  A second panel will provide an update about new minimally invasive spine procedures and will present evidence-based optimal intraoperative and perioperative management of patients undergoing large spine surgeries. 

A third panel will present the new anticoagulant rivaroxaban, as well as a review of the current OAPRS recommendations regarding the performance of regional anesthesia in patients taking anticoagulant medications. The effects of anesthesia on cancer and metastatic disease will also be discussed.  A workshop teaching ultrasound guided peripheral nerve blocks will be offered allowing for small group hands-on imagining of neural structures in live models.
