Peter M. Winter Award for Excellence in Medical Student Teaching

Dr. Winter served as chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh from 1979 to 1996. He came to us from Seattle, where he had been assistant chairman of Academic Affairs at the University of Washington. During his tenure in Pittsburgh, he successfully built one of the largest academic departments of anesthesiology in the country. In 1996, he stepped down from the Department Chair, but he remains on the faculty. Dr. Winter currently serves on numerous committees and as director of Faculty Development. This award was instituted in 2000 in honor of Dr. Winter, and is presented each year to one faculty member for his or her outstanding contribution to the education of medical students.

Mark H. Gilliand, MD Award for Best Clinical Resident

Mark was born and raised in the Pittsburgh area. He was an excellent resident, and was named Chief Resident in his last year of residency. His performance as Chief was outstanding, and he had planned to join the faculty at Montefiore Hospital. Tragically, however, Dr. Gilliand died just before his residency graduation. This award is given each year to the "Best Clinical Resident" in memory of Dr. Gilliand.
