Leadership,
Vision, and Voice –
New Department Chairman,
John P. Williams, MD |
|
Not
long after the new millennium dawned, the chairmanship of the Department
of Anesthesiology passed to “an extremely thoughtful, energetic,
and visionary leader; a superb clinician; and an inspiring educator.”
Those are the words that School of Medicine Dean Arthur S. Levine, MD
chose to describe John P. Williams, MD. Dr. Levine saluted the new chairman
for his successful interim chairmanship of “one of the
largest and most complex – if not the largest and most complex –
of any such departments nationally.”
Dr. Williams believes that his role as chairman is defined by the environment
in which he serves – the UPMC Health System. Because of the size
of the System and the scope of its services, Dr. Williams considers his
role to be equal to that of the chief executive officer of a major corporation.
He describes his commission in three broad areas: vision, leadership,
and representation: continue
Progress Report –
the Pittsburgh-Palermo Connection
This July, the Istituto
Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad alta Specializzazione (IsMeTT
– or UPMC Palermo) celebrates its third anniversary of clinical
activity in Sicily, Italy. Thanks to the dedicated work and expertise
of UPMC professionals, many from our own Department, in this brief time,
not only has the Istituto established much-needed services in an area
that was lacking, but it has also distinguished itself internationally
as a model of private-public partnership in health care.

Victor L. Scott, MD, director of Anesthesiology & Critical Care Medicine,
and medical director of Operating Room Services at IsMeTT, was there to
assist with the birth of the project and has worked tirelessly to help
the Istituto reach its current phenomenal level of success. continue
Anesthesia and Disaster Medicine
By
Ernesto A. Pretto, MD, MPH
Especially in light of current global tensions in the
wake of recent events, it is highly appropriate that we stop for a moment
to think about emergency preparedness. In a national emergency, we may
be called on to perform a variety of functions. As health care providers,
what do we need to know? Specifically, what is the big picture? How do
we fit into it? What might we be called upon to do in a national emergency?
Where will we most likely be doing it? What anesthesia techniques and
equipment will we need?
The following article is the first of a three-part series developed to
address these issues. The articles are excerpts from a book that I am
writing on Evaluation of Medical Disaster Response, and will appear in
Anesthesiology News in three installments:
- Basic
Concepts and Definitions
-
General Framework for EMS Systems Response to Disaster and the role
of the Anesthesiologist
- Commonly
Employed Anesthesia Techniques and Equipment for Disaster Medicine

Note
Ernesto Pretto, MD
Dear Colleagues
It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I present to you this new
Anesthesiology newsletter, in a different format and medium. As most of
you are already aware, consistent with the recent creation of the Department
of Critical Care Medicine (CCM), the print publication Anesthesiology
& Critical Care News is replaced by two separate electronic newsletters
– one to cover news in the Department of Anesthesiology, the other
for the Department of Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Ake Grenvik continues
as editor of the CCM newsletter, and I have agreed to take on the editorship
of Anesthesiology News, together with Ms. Patti Boyle, production editor
for the former joint newsletter, and Brad Stezoski, who will serve as
Webmaster for both newsletters. We will be ably assisted by a distinguished
panel of Editorial Board members, 'correspondents,' and contributors.
