2008 Anesthesiology Board Review Course | May 15-18, 2008

The UPP Department of Anesthesiology, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Pittsburgh Center for Continuing Education in the Health Scienes and CMEinfo are pleased to announce the 2008 Anesthesiology Board Review Course, to be held in Pittsburgh from May 15-18 2008 Our strong teaching faculty are highlighted in this course which is meant to provide anesthesiologists with current, relevant information to prepare for the American Board of Anesthesiology Certification/Recertification examinations. Thirty-five members of the department faculty participated in the original 2003 course, which was updated most recently in 2007. In addition to material already included in the original courses, the 2008 course will feature opportunities to participate in the Peter M Winter Institute for Simulation, Education and Research (WISER). Mouse Model Could Provide Clues to Autistic Behavior
Scientists have developed a new mouse model to help illuminate the vagaries of autism, according to a study from a School of Medicine researcher and other colleagues.
The study focused on mice missing the gabrb3 gene, which codes for a protein important in brain development and normal adult brain function, said David Clark, PhD, associate professor of anesthesiology and the paper's senior author. The study, led by Timothy DeLorey, PhD, a neuroscientist at the Molecular Research Institute in Palo Alto, used mice developed by co-author Gregg Homanics, PhD, professor of anesthesiology and pharmacology at the University of Pittsburgh.

University of Pittsburgh Ranks Sixth in Nationwide NIH Funding
Pitt moves up on benchmark of research excellence in 2006
PITTSBURGH, Jan. 15 – In an era when the federal budget for biomedical research is failing to keep up with inflation, the University of Pittsburgh has improved its ranking to sixth in the nation among academic institutions and their affiliates in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) – a universally recognized benchmark of research excellence. Newly released data for fiscal year 2006, shows that Pitt received $447 million in NIH research support, with almost 95 percent of this funding coming to the university’s six health sciences schools (Medicine, Public Health, Dental Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Health and Rehabilitation Sciences). In addition, Pitt ranks fourth nationally in the number of individual grants received. READ MORE |

Starting this year Anesthesiology has instituted a ‘Year in Review’ article which highlights a dozen papers published in 2007. Effect of Isoflurane and Other Potent Inhaled Anesthetics on Minimum Alveolar Concentration, Learning, and the Righting Reflex in Mice Engineered to Express [alpha]1 [gamma]-Aminobutyric Acid Type A Receptors Unresponsive to Isoflurane authored by Gregg Homanics and collaborators appears in the January 2008 issue.
