International Opportunities

"Three medical professionals pose for a group photo in scrubs"

The diversity of clinical settings you will experience as a resident is enhanced by the opportunity to practice internationally as a CA-3. International rotations are fully supported by the department, and your clinical duties will always be under the supervision of an anesthesiologist from our faculty. Travel, lodging and expenses are covered. Currently, there are two different international rotations to choose from:

Pediatric Missions

This rotation starts with a two-week refresher in pediatric anesthesia at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Afterwards, you will spend seven to ten days providing pediatric anesthesia in a medically underserved country. Recent trips have taken residents to Bhutan, Colombia, Guatemala, Haiti and Vietnam. Commonly treated conditions include cleft lip/palate repair, contracture release from burn injuries sustained in cooking fires, and even repair of injuries sustained in bear attacks.

UPMC Palermo

Residents participating in this rotation will spend two months at the Mediterranean Institute for Transplantation and Specialized Therapies, a hospital in Palermo, Italy that is part of the UPMC system. Here you will work alongside our own faculty providing anesthesia for transplants and cardiac surgery. You will have the opportunity to experience the intersection between American and European medicine in a state-of-the-art facility. Residents have ample time to enjoy the local culture after hours, with opportunity for travel on the weekends.
