It is truly a privilege to serve as the Residency Administration for one of the top anesthesiology residency programs in the country. UPMC’s program emphasizes the creation of leaders in the field of anesthesiology. While our diverse case load (over 300,000 cases to choose from each year) and comprehensive didactic series (with protected time to guarantee attendance) are core features of our program, these features alone are not enough to create leaders. Faculty experts in every subspecialty of anesthesiology will serve as your mentors. These experts will help you explore areas beyond the operating room and facilitate your involvement in academic projects and leadership roles of your choosing. Our residents regularly present their work at national meetings of professional societies, including the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine (ASRA), the Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP), and the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia (SPA). Every academic year, our residents give more than 70 presentations at regional, national, or international meetings.

We also feel it is important to foster leadership skills during residency by encouraging resident participation in departmental, hospital, and national committees. Our residents are awarded stipends annually from the Foundation for Anesthesiology Education and Research Scholars to attend special programs at the ASA's annual meeting, and we have resident representation within the leadership of the ASA, the American Medical Association (AMA), and the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists (PSA). Since utilizing residents as the sole operating room workforce is not our residency program’s primary focus, we are able to allocate the time and resources needed for these activities. Residents also hold important roles in departmental, hospital, and system groups such as the Patient Safety and Graduate Medical Education Committees. Our graduates secure competitive fellowships, extraordinary opportunities in private practices, and leadership roles in the field.

Both Dr. Adams (Program Director) and Dr. Ungerman (Associate Program Director) are native Pittsburghers as well as graduates of the UPMC Anesthesiology Residency Program. Dr. Alfaras (Assistant Program Director) joined after he completed his fellowship at UPMC and is enthusiastic to be part of the team. Through our roles, we will continue fostering the tradition of excellence in anesthesiology education that our training program offers our residents. We are all eager to continue providing our proven top-tier approach to anesthesiology residency training.

Finally, Pittsburgh is a hidden gem. The city features affordable living, a well-known theater district, a nationally-renowned orchestra, numerous museums, three professional sports teams, countless festivals, national awarded state parks, ski resorts, and some of the best breweries in the country! Also, the Steel City is just a few hours’ drive from other major cities and even more great attractions. As Pittsburgh continues to thrive, residents are provided with a great living opportunity that exceeds expectations! Learn even more about the region at Visit Pittsburgh.com.

Thank you for your interest in UPMC and Pittsburgh. We would love to meet you to show you our program firsthand. Please contact us with any questions or for additional information on life as a UPMC resident.
